MECHANISM OF ACTION: Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide formed from D-galactose and fructose. Lactulose is a prebiotic substance that strengthens the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, whereas Clostridium and Escherichia coli may be suppressed. In the colon, lactulose is metabolized by bacterial enzymes to short-chain fatty acids, mainly lactic and acetic acid, methane, and hydrogen. This effect leads to a decrease in the pH value and an increase in the colon's osmotic pressure. This causes stimulation of peristalsis and an increase in the water content of the faeces.

INDICATIONS: Lactutor is used for the treatment of constipation.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients.

SIDE EFFECTS: Flatulence may occur during the first few days of treatment, and as a rule, it disappears after a couple of days. Abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur when dosages are higher than instructed, and in such a case, the dosage should be decreased.

DOSAGE: As directed by the physician.

DIRECTIONS: The dosage is patient-dependent, and the following serves as a guide. Constipation: 15 to 45 ml per day, depending on the severity of the condition. Portal systemic encephalopathy (PSE) 30 to 15 ml three times daily. Salmonellosis 30 to 90 ml per day.

STORAGE: Store at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C. Protect from sunlight.
