DESCRIPTION:
Metronidazole is a Nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used particularly for anaerobic bacteria and
protozoa. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, amebicide and antiprotozoal.
COMPOSITION:
Each 5 ml contains:
Metronidazole Benzoate
Equivalent to Metronidazole BP 125 mg
In a Flavoured syrup base q.s
Colour: Tartrazine
MECHANISM OF ACTION: Metronidazole, taken up by diffusion, is selectively absorbed by anaerobic bacteria and sensitive protozoa. The metronidazole metabolites are taken up into bacterial DNA and form unstable molecules. This function only occurs when Metronidazole is partially reduced, and because this reduction usually happens only in anaerobic cells, it has relatively little effect upon human cells or aerobic bacteria.
PHARMACOKINETICS: Oral absorption of Metronidazole is excellent. Bioactivity is at least 90%. Protein binding of Metronidazole is roughly 10%, CSF Concentration of Metronidazole are approximately 43% of plasma concentrations. The drug crosses the placenta and enters breast milk. A significant portion of Metronidazole (30-60%) is metabolized in the liver by oxidation, hydroxylation, and glucuronidation which has some antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity. Within 24 hours, approximately 80% of Metronidazole is excreted in urine and 30% in feces.
INDICATIONS: Prevention and treatment of infections due to anaerobic bacteria, particularly species of Bacteroides, Fusobacteria, Clostridia, and non-specific vaginitis.
SIDE EFFECTS: Sudden sickness, fluttering or tightness of the chest, headache, loss of appetite, darkening of urine.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: As directed by the Physician.
STORAGE: Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Protect from light.
PACKAGING: 100 ml bottle in a duplex board carton.
