TOPIBACT OINTMENT

Description: Topibact is an antibacterial ointment used to treat impetigo and secondary skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Dosage Form: Ointment

Route of Administration: Topical

Composition:

Mupirocin                     I.P.           2.0% w/w

Non-greasy base                            q.s.

Mechanism of Action: Mupirocin ointment inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by targeting the enzyme isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase. This disruption in protein production prevents the growth and reproduction of Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, making it effective in treating localized skin infections. Mupirocin is bacteriostatic at lower concentrations but it exerts bactericidal effects with prolonged exposure, killing 90-99% of susceptible bacteria over a 24-hour period.

Indications: Topibact ointment is commonly indicated for the topical treatment of certain bacterial skin infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. Specific indications include – Impetigo, Secondary skin infections and Folliculitis.

Dosage: As directed by the physician.

Side effects:  Burning, Itching and Redness.

Contraindications: Patients with a history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to its component should not use the cream.

Precautions:  Avoid using Topibact ointment on open wounds, cuts, or burns unless directed by a healthcare professional. The ointment is typically intended for intact skin. While Topibact ointment is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider before using any medication during these periods. Prolonged or repeated use of Topibact ointment may lead to the development of resistant strains of bacteria. It is essential to use the medication as prescribed and not exceed the recommended duration of treatment. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. While systemic absorption of Topibact ointment from topical use is minimal, individuals with pre-existing kidney problems may need monitoring, especially if using the ointment over a large area.

Storage: Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Do not freeze.
