DESCRIPTION:
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used particularly for anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, amebicide, and antiprotozoal. Loperamide is a synthetic piperidine derivative, an opioid drug used against diarrhoea resulting from gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Metronidazole enters the cells of microorganisms that contain nitroreductase, where its nitro group is reduced. Unstable intermediate compounds are formed which bind to DNA and inhibit synthesis, causing cell death. Loperamide works by decreasing the activity of the myenteric plexus, which decreases the tone of the longitudinal smooth muscles but increases the tone of circular smooth muscles of the intestinal wall. This increases the number of times substances stay in the intestine, allowing for more water to be absorbed out of the fecal matter.
INDICATIONS:
Diarrhoea or dysentery due to bacteria, protozoal or mixed origin infection, irritable bowel syndrome.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to this product or any of its ingredients.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Dizziness, nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dry mouth may occur.
PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS:
Metronidazole has been shown to be carcinogenic in mice and rats. Unnecessary use of the drug should therefore be avoided.
DOSAGE:
As directed by the physician.
STORAGE:
Store in a cool place. Protect from direct sunlight.
