MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Carbonyl iron is a form of mineral iron. Iron is important for many functions in the body, especially for the transport of oxygen in the blood. Zinc is essential to numerous physiological processes, including the function of many enzymes in the body. Deficiency may lead to poor night vision, slow healing wounds, poor sexual development and function in males, poor appetite (perhaps owing to a decrease in the sense of taste and smell), a reduced ability to ward off infections, diarrhoea, dermatitis and in children, retarded growth. Folic acid enhances chemical reactions that contribute to the production of red blood cells, the manufacture of DNA needed for cell replication and the metabolism of amino acids (compounds necessary for the manufacture of proteins).

INDICATIONS:
Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia and other anaemias e.g, megaloblastic anaemia (due to folic acid deficiency). Treatment of zinc deficiency, which may occur especially during pregnancy. Folic acid is used to prevent neural tube birth defects.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this product. Iron supplements are contraindicated in those with hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis.

SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, epigastric distress, diarrhoea, constipation, black stools.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Iron compounds taken orally can impair the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Manganese also decreases the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics. Antacids given concomitantly with iron compounds decrease iron absorption.

PRECAUTIONS:
Oral iron may aggravate existing peptic ulcers, regional enteritis and ulcerative colitis.

DOSAGE:
As prescribed by the physician.
