Erythromycin Estolate is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat infections caused by certain types of bacteria. It has an antimicrobial spectrum similar to or slightly wider than penicillin and is often used for people who have an allergy to penicillins. Respiratory tract infections have better coverage of atypical organisms, including Mycoplasma and legionellosis.

Eq. to Erythromycin Base
In a syrupy flavored base
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Erythromycin and other macrolide antibiotics inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the 23S rRNA molecule (in the 50S subunit) of the bacterial ribosome blocking the exit of the growing peptide chain of sensitive microorganisms.
Indicated for using lower respiratory tract infections such as whooping cough, diphtheria, Legionnaires disease, and upper respiratory infections such as sinusitis and pharyngitis.
Contraindicated in patients with a known history of sensitivity to this drug and those with pre-existing liver disease or dysfunction.
Gastrointestinal disturbances include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
Erythromycin potentiates the effect of astemizole, carbamazepine, corticosteroids, digoxin, ergot alkaloids, and theophylline.
PRECAUTIONS & WARNING:
Prolonged or repeated use of erythromycin may result in an overgrowth of non-susceptible bacteria or fungi and organisms initially sensitive to erythromycin.
As prescribed by the physician.
