Mechanism of Action: Dextromethorphan hydrobromide (anti-tussive) acts by suppressing the cough reflex by a direct action on the cough centre in the medulla of the brain. Chlorpheniramine maleate (antihistamine) reduces the symptoms of sneezing, rhinorrhea and nasal itching by antagonizing the action of the histamine H1 receptors. Phenylephrine (Decongestant) has a sympathomimetic effect which produces vasoconstriction, which, in turn, relieves nasal congestion.
