MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Ferric ammonium citrate provides an optimum tolerance of the iron preparation, which is of utmost importance in maintaining long-term patient compliance to any hematinic therapy. It rapidly supplements elemental iron so that iron deficiency is quickly controlled, thus leading to faster correction of anemia and replenishment of tissue iron stores. Folic acid is biochemically inactive and converted to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate by dihydrofolate reductase in the liver.

INDICATIONS:
TORVIT Zinc Syrup is a haematinic syrup indicated for supportive nutritional supplementation when iron and vitamins are indicated therapeutically. During dietary insufficiency, when there is increased physiological demand, such as during periods of rapid growth, convalescence.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Peptic ulcer, regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis. Hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, hemolytic anemia, and all anemias other than iron deficiency.

SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, regurgitation, constipation, pyrosis (burning sensation in the chest), and an upset stomach may occur with hematinics. Iron may cause your stools to turn black, an effect that is not harmful. GI effects can be reduced by taking it with food.

PRECAUTIONS:
Oral iron may aggravate peptic ulcers, regional enteritis, and ulcerative colitis.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Iron compounds taken orally can impair the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. Antacids given concomitantly with iron compounds decrease iron absorption.

WARNING:
Do not exceed recommended dosage.
